- FIRST, students will discuss the progress of their Outsiders project.
- SECOND, students will begin reading The Cage in small groups.

- SECOND, students will continue reading The Cage in small groups.

- FIRST, students will discuss the thoughts/opinions about small reading groups / the current memoir, The Cage.
- SECOND, students will complete a response to the prompt:
Do you like/dislike the small reading groups? Why?
- I like the small reading groups because...
- I dislike the small reading groups because...
Do you like/dislike the current reading memoir, The Cage?
- I like The Cage because...
- I dislike The Cage because...I would like to read another novel because... - THIRD, students will continue the novel, The Cage OR switch to Number the Stars.

In this class, I can effectively use a reading log and characterization sheet.
- FIRST, students will meet in two small groups - one group reading The Cage and the other, Number the Stars.
- SECOND, students will fill in their characterization sheet (character name AND trait).
- THIRD, students will read in their small groups until 10 minutes before the period. At the 12 PM mark, students will complete a one-sentence response prompt to their novel.
